The Icon
"No one will play Elizabeth Taylor, but Elizabeth Taylor."

A moment like this is bittersweet. Ms. Taylor lived only what can be described as a colorful life. She experienced more in eight decades than one would expect in so many lifetimes. She has been at times inspirational and more often than not, controversial. Most notable to me was her charity. She recognized her privilege and had an awareness about how she could use that to help others. Her dedication to AIDs research clearly being the most central to that point. I also admired her outlook on what life has given her. Rather than taking the abundance for granted, she emphasized the impermanence of it all. As her life would likely not surpass the life of her possessions, she was simply a guardian for a brief moment. I only hope I can live my life this way, cherishing every moment and giving what I have for others.
"I never planned to acquire a lot of jewels or a lot of husbands. For me, life happened, just as it does for anyone else. I have been supremely lucky in my life in that I have known great love, and of course I am the temporary custodian of some incredible and beautiful things. But I have never felt more alive than when I watched my children delight in something, never more alive than when I have watched a great artist perform, and never richer than when I have scored a big check to fight AIDS. Follow your passion, follow your heart, and the things you need will come." (Harper's Bazaar)
